second quarter outside reading book review

The Giver by; Lois Lowry Dell Laurel-Leaf Inc., 1993. Genre: Fiction

The Giver is about a family that lives in a certain community. In this community you can only have a mother, father, son and daughter. If you have two sons or two daughters then one of them is taken away. In the Giver Jonas is the main character. He lives with his mom, dad, and his sister Lilly. Jonas is eleven and Lilly is eight, they both go to a district school in the community that has rules to follow. If the young children misbehave then they get hit on their hand with a discipline wand. In this unusual community that they live in they have speakers everywhere that make an announcement for people to take their pill. The pill that they take makes them forget about things that happened during the day. Except for the giver who holds all feelings and memories of people. When the chief elder he becomes the chosen one to hold all memories and feelings of everyone since the Giver is ready to retire chooses Jonas. “ The whole work is seamless, compelling, and memorable- impossible to put down; difficult to forget.”

The writing style of this author is descriptive and very informational. This books really helps you understand what takes place and what exactly is happening. I haven’t read any other books by this author, but I hope to in the future. This book captures what is happening and there is some twist and turns that take place. “ The Giver hesitated painfully, as if saying the name aloud might be excruciating. (140)

I enjoyed this book a lot because I’ve never read anything like this before. It was nice to have a book that kept me thinking what was going to happen. There were parts in this book that I enjoyed and every chapter had something new hat I didn’t know, so it wasn’t like I knew what was going to happen before I even read the chapter. There are a lot of good quotes in this book that brings the characters to life and describes the characters themselves and the scene or objects in the book. I hope to read other books by this author and I hope they are as good or if not better then this book that I read.

"First Quarter Outside Reading Book Review."

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Scholastic Inc, 1876. Genre: fiction

The book the Adventures of Tom Sawyer is about the main character Tom, who is a troublemaker and is very adventurous. He lives with his aunt Polly and his half brother Sid. Tom comes up with different plans and ideas for adventures and ends up persuading his friends to go along with them. The are fake pirates at an island, childish yet fun, Mark Twain brings the setting to life, as the book takes place in St.Petersberg , Missouri.
“Mark Twain is now considered to be one of Americas greatest writers.”
Mark Twain is able to provide a story line that tells you how adventurous kids can truly be. His writing style is specific in the setting and describes where each adventure takes place. The author is also able to use fairly good vocabulary to enhance the piece. The characters are each individually different and only some of the same characteristics are shared. For example Tom and Huck Finn (Toms best friend) are both adventurous and have similar ideas. The author also includes language that was used back then, that had improper grammar and older slang to make you feel like you are in that lifetime.
Another book that Mark Twain has written was The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I believe his book is based off the book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
“ The sun rose upon a tranquil world, and beamed down upon the peaceful village like a benediction.”
The Adventures of Tom sawyer wasn’t my favorite book that I have ever read because I didn’t enjoy certain parts of this book that much because the book lost my interest at times. Even though this book was Adventurous I found it hard to understand at times because of the language. I’m not use to reading books that have improper grammar so that’s why this was a challenge for me. If the book had used better language then I think I would have liked it better because I enjoyed the plot, theme, and setting of the book. This book was light hearted and funny and wasn’t to serious which made it interesting and sometimes exciting. I would overall say that this book was fairly good and took you back in time, I would however like to look at other books by this author and maybe eventually read them.

What Matters Most The Priced Or Priceless Items/Momments

What Matters Most The Priced or The Priceless Items?

It seems like now a days celebrities have to shell out loads of money on different items because they are pressured to live up to certain expectations. As more people enter into fame what really values most to them seems to change. As you see more celebrities in the magazines all they seem to talk about is how much their clothes are worth or other expensive things. Is it the items that are worth a lot of money valued more then the priceless moments shared everyday that should be cherished? Either way I love both the priceless moments and the priced items.

Everyday when I come home she is waiting there for me on my windowsill. She has black and white soft fur. Her name is Sylvester Rose Picard and she is a cat if you haven’t already guessed. Sylvester is ten years old and is a tuxedo cat. She is not just a regular cat because she likes to play with dogs and gets along with them, she likes to be held on her back sometimes and she lets me clip her nails. Sylvester is well behaved and gets along with anyone who is nice to her.
When I got her on Christmas Eve it meant a lot to me because my mom had gotten me my cat and at the time she didn’t really want any more pets. I begged my mom to get a cat because I knew they wouldn’t be to high maintenance like dogs can be sometimes and I could handle the responsibility. When I got her I was filled with joy and my cat on the other hand seemed to be a little scared. Ever since then I’m always excited to see her when I get home. Mostly every day I come home from school and do my homework and then go see Sylvester. She loves to play with her fake mouse (which is her favorite cat toy). I just like the enjoyment of relaxing with my cat and watching TV.

My necklace is silver with a gold circle in the middle, Kind of like a pendent. When you hold it up to the light or when the sun hits it, it glistens and sparkles. My mom and dad got me this necklace for my birthday when I was thirteen. I had, had almost the whole set of this jewelry but, I was just missing that one piece, the necklace. I hinted around to my mom that I had wanted this necklace for a long time and if she got it for me then I wouldn’t bug her. When it finally came time for my birthday on March thirtieth, after having some food, it was time I was anticipating this moment just to see a shape of a jewelry box and snatch and tear the paper off to reveal my beautiful necklace but, nothing usually ever turns out like you planned. I opened each gift one by one trying to guess what gift my necklace could possibly be in. As I continued to open the presents all I had gotten so far was clothes and gift cards. When I thought I had opened all of my gifts my pulled out a box, I was so anxious I ripped the paper off and sure enough it was my necklace. I was so enthused just from this necklace but, have you ever heard the saying; good things come to those who wait? Well that’s what happened in my situation!
This was a really special gift because I had wanted my necklace for a long time. It made happy because I knew it was expensive and I wasn’t sure if my parents would be able to get it in time for my birthday because my mom had to order it. This brings me joy because it brings me back to that specific moment and time. Another thing is I haven’t seen hardly anyone with this necklace so, it’s one of a kind or at least I like to think so.
I value both these items because they bring me joy and happiness. They always put a smile on my face. My cat is different from my necklace because my cat is irreplaceable and there’s no other cat like her. I like my necklace because it is pretty and my parents had gotten it for me. I will always value these items.

aThe Girl At The Restaurant How I live Now by: Meg RosoffThe Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian By: Sherman Alexie It was Tuesday, June27. I walked over to Rowdy’s house only to see that his next-door neighbor was moving. When I saw him I said, “Hey do you want to go to lunch at Jimmy’s Diner?” He said, “yeah sure, why not.” I asked him if he knew who was going to be living next door to him and he said, “I’m not sure.” When we got to Jimmy’s diner, which was a mile outside the reservation I ordered Coca Cola with a Hamburg and fries. Rowdy got a hot dog and a milkshake. As we were sitting there eating I was wondering what we would do this summer besides play basketball. When Rowdy and I were finishing up eating a girl who looked like she was our age walked through the door and shouted Rowdy, Rowdy looked up and said, “Daisy is that you?” “Yes it’s me.” “I haven’t seen you in a while.” The girl standing next to Rowdy seemed like she knew him so well. “Oh Rowdy I forgot to introduce you to my aunt Leona.” “Hi ”her aunt said. Daisy said, “I’m going to be living with my aunt this summer on the reservation.” Rowdy said, “Really where.” “I believe it’s 164 Meadow Brook Road.” “No way that’s where I live, except I’m number165.” Rowdy and Daisy seemed so excited, boy did I feel out of the loop, honestly I almost found it sickening to see how well they got along. I mean Rowdy’s never had ant other friends besides me well at least that’s what I thought. So I told Rowdy I was just going to walk home and he said, “Oh Arnold sorry, this is Daisy my best friend that I lost touch with during the war.”“Well I’ll explain it more to you later.”“Are you sure you want to walk home by yourself.”“Yeah.”“Bye Arnold.” Daisy said.So as I walked home alone, I wondered if I would still be friends with Rowdy. When I got home I started drawing pictures in my drawing book of Rowdy and Daisy so happy and me looking like I was depressed. I can’t believe Rowdy never told me about about this Daisy character before. I mean if she was that important he would have told me, right? At about 2:30 in the afternoon Rowdy, Daisy and Daisy’s aunt Leona brought boxes inside their house and started unpacking them. I thought to my self that I should probably help so; to my surprise I went over and asked them if they needed any help and they did. I started bringing in boxes into the kitchen and Daisy asked me if I wanted to play basketball with her and Rowdy tomorrow morning. I didn’t want to play basketball with them but I had nothing else better to do so I said yes.The next morning I woke up and Knocked on Rowdy’s door to see if he was ready to play basketball with Daisy and me. He came out and said, “Arnold I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that Daisy was my best friend, well besides you but, when the war started I lost contact with her and couldn’t write letters because she ended up living with her aunt Penn for a while. Ounce Daisy came out we started to play basketball and she beat Rowdy and I. I decided life is to short to hold a grudge. As the days went by I talked to Daisy more and more everyday and Rowdy too! I actually became really good friends with her. When it came time for her to go to New York City to live with her dad I was really sad. I kept in contact with her and she kept in contact with Rowdy also. I never knew that I would become best friends with the girl from the restaurant.
